Halloween Part One

October 25, 2009

DSC02292I love Halloween! I love dressing up, the pumpkins, the crisp autumn air, the candy. Love it, love it, love it. But, here’s some stuff I do not love about Halloween: extremely overpriced, poorly made costumes; the fact that Halloween has turned into an excuse for women to be sluts for a day. Referring to the latter…when did this happen? I do not remember growing up seeing teenagers, mothers, and middle-aged women running around in a “sexy” anything let alone the wide array of “sexy” choices there are today. Here is a SHORT list of ridiculous “sexy” costumes I found the other day at the store:

Sexy Little Red Riding Hood, Sexy Nun ( no, not kidding), Sexy Jailbait, Sexy Referee, Sexy Cleopatra, Sexy School Teacher, etc….

Really all this means is, “Let’s take a run-of-the-mill costume, make it lingerie, and call it sexy Fill-In-The-Blank”. Well, I’m not havin’ any of it.

So this year, I am a rabbit which turned out to be a difficult choice since the only rabbit costumes were…you guess it…Playboy Bunny Costume. So, I made my own. It’s a white pants, a white shirt, a loofah for a tail, and homemade bunny ears made from cardboard and a headband. We went to a friend’s Halloween themed birthday party last night and I modified my costume to the White Rabbit from “Alice in Wonderland” by adding a red vest and a pocket watch. Evangeline dressed as Alice and was soooooo cute! For actual Halloween, she’s going to be a carrot which still ties in with the rabbit theme. Kyle will accompany us as our farmer. Here’s a few pictures from last night. Can’t wait for the actual Halloween Day!

Your daughter makes a very sweet Dorothy, but where is the picture of YOUR costume? 😉

I totally agree with you about sexy costumes, by the way. It’s so disheartening – especially when you see tweens and teens sporting those costumes. The crazy thing is that the “sexy” costumes are the NORM. If you are a woman and want to dress up, there are actually very, very few options that don’t involve a lot of cleavage or teeny tiny skirts. I’d like to see “non-sexy” little red riding hood, nun, school teacher, etc. costumes instead…

Thanks so much for all your sweet comments! More pictures of Halloween are coming soon. I definitely agree about the costumes becoming the Norm. So sad. But, it’s up to women like us to CHANGE the norm. Watch out world…here come the non-slutty ladies!
